Having spent more money last summer than they’ve ever spent in one specific transfer window, Brighton fans expectations were hightenened this season. After a fast start, Brightons form has stalled as of late, notably with a 7-0 drubbing from Nottingham Forrest. Many of their players have had stellar seasons, such as Van Hecke, Mitoma and Welbeck, however Carlos Baleba has had a fantastic season that has gone under the radar.

Standing at 5’10 and weighing 161lbs, Baleba is an imposing player in the center of the park. Great at picking the ball deep and either turning and driving with the ball or spraying it out wide, Baleba is a very versatile player on the ball. With a passing completion rate of 88.6% this season and ranking in the 84th percentile in successful take-ons this season, his composure is a hallmark of his game.

Although his on the ball ability is what most pay attention to, his defensive ability is what takes him apart from the competition, as his build and intelligence helps him fit in a variety of systems. He could fit in a low block as he ranks in 92nd percentile in aerial duels won, 94th percentile for blocks and 90th percentile for interceptions, but also in a high pressing outfit as he ranks in the 98th percentile in passes blocked and 95th percentile for dribblers tackled. These stats showcase his world class reading of the game, which for a 21 year old is extremely impressive.

Initially signed to replace Moises Caicedo, after selling him to Chelsea two summers ago, Baleba started off slow and took time to adapt to the rigors of the Premier League. However, this season he’s suddenly become a key cog in Hürzeler’s system and is undroppable at the moment. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the next year or so a top 6 Premier League teams bids over $100 million for him
