In a very important win today against Brentford, Spurs showed some defensive resilience which has lacked in their games so far this season. But, on the ball they still lacked fluidity when building from the back, often getting trapped in 1v2 or 1v3 scenarios. It has been clear that Postecouglou will not change his philosophy, but certain minor tweaks could help Spurs better control games and have more stability in possession.

This season Kulusevksi has established himself as Spurs’ most important player. However, playing him as an attacking midfielder limits his attacking presence. It is imperative that Kulusevski plays as right winger in order to get the best out of him.

Moreover, Maddison should be a key man for Spurs. However, Postecoglou has not been able to get the best out of him. Madison needs to be in offensive positions, close to the penalty box, and dictate proceedings by playing slick through balls or crossing into box.

Another player who has been underwhelming this season is Son. In the Postecoglou system, Son is pushed out wide, which limits his presence near the box. Son is deadly in and around the box and thats where he should be playing. Playing Son, as an inside forward instead of a winger, and having Udogie playing as an attacking left wing back instead of inverted wing-back could be an interesting option for Spurs. Udogie having previously played as an attacking wing back at Udinese, knows this role very well. This tweak would allow Spurs to keep the width and have Son playing closer to goal.

Lastly, Son does not have the pace to out run an opposing wing back, and thus cannot bring the ball higher up the pitch as he once was able to do. Thus, by forcing the play down the right hand side, with technical players like Maddison, Kulusevski and Porro, could aid in Spurs bringing the ball higher up the pitch in order to establish possession in the opponents half.

In this image, I will illustrate my proposed Spurs lineup (with all players fit) when they have the ball.

By playing in this shape, it allows Spurs to have that 4-man midfield which every team seems to be employing these days, and it creates triangles all around the field which will help Spurs play around the opponents press easily. With these tweaks I believe Spurs could challenge for the Europa League trophy and get their Premier League campaign back on track.
